What is SIP, and how does eComms deliver it?

    A Fixed Deadline for Migration

Telstra's PSTN and ISDN infrastructure is being switched off exchange by exchange, and businesses still on those services have a fixed deadline.

    SIP Trunking, the Direct Replacement

SIP trunking routes calls over your internet connection, delivers the same functionality, and costs significantly less per channel than ISDN.

    Carrier-Agnostic, Melbourne-Based, Fully Managed

We source SIP from whichever Tier 1 carriers suit your sites, managing migration, number porting, and the ongoing connection throughout.

    What SIP Trunking Gives You

    How SIP Trunking Works

SIP, or Session Initiation Protocol, is the signalling standard that manages voice calls over internet connections. When a staff member makes a call, the SIP system establishes the connection over your internet link, routes the call to the destination through the carrier’s network, and maintains the session until the call ends. From the caller’s perspective the experience is identical to a traditional phone call. From the business’s perspective, the call travels as data rather than over dedicated copper circuits, which is what makes it cheaper, more scalable, and more flexible.

SIP trunking works with most modern PBX platforms including Mitel MiVoice Business, 3CX, Cisco, Avaya, and others. eComms manages the carrier layer so the business connects its existing or new phone system to eComms SIP, and calls flow in and out as they did before the migration. Compatibility is confirmed during the initial assessment before any changes are made.

    Carrier-Agnostic Approach

eComms is not a single carrier, which is one of the most significant differences between eComms SIP and carrier-direct SIP products. Because we access wholesale SIP from Telstra, Optus, TPG, Vocus, and other Tier 1 providers, we can source the connection that delivers the best combination of price, performance, and resilience at each of your sites. A site in Melbourne CBD may run on a different carrier to a site in regional Queensland, based on what is available and performing well at that location.

Multi-carrier failover is available for businesses where phone availability is critical. eComms configures the SIP to route automatically to a secondary carrier if the primary drops, and can add 4G failover as a further backup layer for sites where fixed-line quality is variable. The failover is transparent: calls continue without your staff needing to do anything.

Thousands of Businesses Across Australia Trust eComms to Keep Them Connected

“Our previous setup meant every new site was an IT project. Getting phones and internet sorted took weeks and cost money we had not budgeted. Now we call eComms, tell them a site is starting, and it is ready before the concreters are done.”

Answers to common questions about our managed phone systems, connectivity solutions, carrier network, and ongoing support services.

What is SIP trunking and how is it different from ISDN?

SIP trunking routes your phone calls over an internet connection using the Session Initiation Protocol. ISDN routes calls over dedicated copper circuits that Telstra is progressively decommissioning across Australia. The practical difference is that SIP trunks are cheaper to run per channel, faster to scale up or down, and can failover automatically to a backup connection if your primary link goes down. If your business is still on ISDN lines, you will need to migrate to SIP trunking or a cloud phone system before your local exchange is switched off by Telstra.

SIP trunking pricing in Australia varies based on the number of simultaneous call channels you need, which carrier delivers the best rate for your locations, and whether you want a managed service on top of the connection. Generally, SIP costs less per channel than ISDN, particularly for businesses with more than 10 to 20 lines currently. eComms provides a no-obligation pricing assessment based on your current call volumes and line count. Because we are carrier-agnostic, we source the most competitive rate across multiple Tier 1 providers rather than applying a fixed price list.

Yes. Your existing geographic numbers, 1300 numbers, and 1800 numbers can all be ported to SIP trunking without changing the numbers your customers call. eComms manages the porting process from start to finish, including liaising with your current carrier, coordinating the cutover date, and testing the new configuration before go-live. Your numbers remain active on the old service until the port is confirmed complete. Number porting typically takes two to four weeks depending on the current carrier and the number of numbers involved.

SIP trunking works over most business-grade internet connections including NBN Business, dedicated fibre, and MPLS. Voice calls require relatively low bandwidth but are sensitive to packet loss and latency, so the quality and consistency of your connection matters more than the raw speed figure. eComms assesses your current internet connection as part of the SIP audit and advises whether it is suitable as-is or whether an upgrade or quality-of-service configuration is needed. For sites with variable NBN performance, 4G failover can be configured to protect call quality during peak congestion periods.

If you are on ISDN lines, now is the time to understand your options before the switch-off timeline reaches your exchange. A free SIP assessment covers your current line count, call volumes, number inventory, and internet connection. eComms gives you a written recommendation and a cost comparison. There is no pressure and no commitment required to get the information you need.
